How to run a casino night at a corporate event

A casino is one of the most rewarding activities at a company dinner or convention: elegant, easy to understand and able to mix people from departments that rarely meet. Running it well, however, means deciding a few things in advance. This is the guide we use with our clients.

How many tables do I need?

The rule of thumb is one table for every 20 guests, with a minimum of three for variety. Not everyone plays at once: part of the group will be at the bar or chatting, and that’s fine. For 100-150 people, four tables work very well; for 300, six to eight.

Which games to choose

• French roulette: essential. No player limit, and every spin is shared.
• Blackjack: the easiest to learn; it is worth having two tables because it is the busiest.
• Texas Hold’em poker: for the most competitive. If there is lots of interest, a tournament is better.
• Craps and horse racing: add atmosphere at events of 150 people or more.

Chips, play money and prizes

Each guest receives a stack of chips or play money on arrival, always with no cash value. At the end, those with the most exchange their chips for prizes, or prizes are drawn among those above a set total. The company decides the prizes: an experience, its own product or a day off work better than a generic gift.

Croupiers

A good croupier is half the experience. They explain the rules to first-timers, keep the pace and create atmosphere. At international events, ask for croupiers who run the table in English.

Space and set-up

Allow about 2 × 3 m per table, plus aisles. Classic tables need no electricity; LED tables need a nearby socket. Each table takes 15 to 30 minutes to set up, so it can be done while the room is being prepared.
