Prize wheels, plinko and promotional games: turning a giveaway into a database
The mechanic, the prizes and the data worth asking for so a promotional game generates useful leads and complies with data protection.
Handing out merchandise at a trade show is easy; making that giveaway useful is not. Promotional games — prize wheels, plinko, prize claw machines, the money booth — turn gift-giving into a small show and, when well planned, into a source of qualified leads.
The mechanic: data in exchange for play
The scheme that works best is simple. Visitors scan a code or give their details to your team; in return, they play and take a prize. With the digital wheel, registration can be done on the screen itself. What matters is that the step is quick: name, company, email and one qualifying question (for example, “when are you planning to renew…?”) are enough.
Prizes that add value
- A few big prizes and many small ones: wheels and plinko let you adjust the ratio through the number of segments or slots.
- Related to your brand: a product sample, a free demo or a discount generate more business than a generic soft toy.
- Deferred prize: a final draw among all participants gives you a legitimate reason to contact them again.
Data protection from the start
If you collect personal data, state who the controller is, what you will use it for and how to exercise data rights, and ask for separate consent to send marketing communications. A sign next to the game with that information and a tick box on the form is enough in most cases; check with your adviser.
Which game to choose
- Small stand: 120 cm wheel or capsule dispenser.
- Heavy footfall: giant plinko or 180 cm wheel, very visible from the aisle.
- Launch or shopping centre: money booth or human claw, which also generate social media content.
Measuring the result
Count participations, qualified contacts and opportunities opened in the following weeks. With those three numbers you will know whether the game paid for itself. If you would like help designing the mechanic, tell us about your activation.
